Abstract
Equipment for automated protein purification and monoclonal antibody production will be used in a range of BBSRC, MRC, Wellcome Trust, EU and industrially-funded projects. Initial projects benefiting directly are those characterising the enzymes involved in benzylphenyl urea resistance, and one using immunological techniques to identify key natural enemies in arable crops and quantify the role of predation in pest population dynamics. Future projects will benefit from tissue localisation of the enzymes involved in pesticide resistance using the monoclonals. This is linked to fundamental work on the expression and management of resistance in a range of insect vectors of agricultural and medical importance. Monoclonal antibodies will also be used increasingly to tackle complex trophic interactions within a range of tropical and temperature cropping systems.
