Abstract
State-of-the-art imaging facilities are a fundamental requirement in all research areas of the Biological Sciences. Recent advances in confocal microscopy mean that the School of Biological Sciences has an urgent requirement for upgrading its outdated imaging equipment. The new equipment will support a wide variety of priority research programmes which have received total funding of over irectorate14 million in the last 5 years from BBSRC, MRC, DERA and the European Union. The equipment will be housed within the School of Biological Sciences imaging facility to provide maximal access. This bid is supported by the University and Faculty, through funding of permanent full-time staff and technical support, in recognition of the absolute necessity for this high quality research facility now and in the future. The Zeiss microscopy package provides the latest developments in fluorescence and confocal microscopy, with a full range of UV and visible excitation wavelength lasers. This Universal microscopy system is required not only for our current research proposals, but will fulfil the requirements of future research that will incorporate new fluorescent markers.
