Abstract
This proposal is for controlled environment plant growth rooms that will be used to study the function, and evaluate the commercial potential, of a range of plant genes that we have cloned from Arabidopsis and Brassica sp. which are involved in signal transduction, self incompatibility, fertility and seed development. Three project areas are involved (i) the identification and functional characterisation of genes involved in anther and pollen development, apomixis and genomic imprinting, (ii) the molecular basis of intra and inter-specific recognition events between pollen and stigma in Arabidopsis and Brassica sp., and (iii) functional characterisation of signalling pathway genes in Arabidopsis that are involved in responses to light, and plant hormones. The proposed research will study the impact of mutations in these genes on developmental events during the life cycle of the plants including elongation growth, flowering and seed development. We will be studying growth, development and gene regulation in response to environmental factors particularly photoperiod, light quality, and temperature; it is therefore essential that this work is conducted in controlled environmental conditions. The research will involve the use of transgenic plants thus, containment level B conditions are required.
