Abstract
Molecular microbiology is one of the major research themes in the Department of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology at the University of Sheffield. Research is focussed on understanding mechanisms of gene regulation and of microbial pathogenicity, using a broad range of organisms. Many of these research areas involve extensive collaboration and are all integrated into the overall research strategy of the Department. For example structure determination using 2D and 3D crystallography is being applied to bacterial oxidases, membrane transporters, novel toxins and potential anti-microbial drug targets, by combining genomic information with structural biology techniques. Bacteria are also used as factories to produce specific over-expressed proteins for biochemical and structural analyses. All of these activities depend heavily upon facilities for the growth of both small and large scale liquid cultures of a range of micro-organisms at different temperatures. The Departments current facilities for autoclaving and microbial growth are outdated and are unable to cope with the increasing volume of microbial research being undertaken. In this proposal, we seek funding to modernise our growth facilities to current standards, in line with this enhanced research activity. We also seek to augment the facility with dedicated cultivation equipment for specialist applications which fall within the research strategy of the group.
