Abstract

The ideal method for characterisation of biological specimens (whether it be for identification or quantification purposes) would have minimum sample preparation, would analyse samples directly (i.e. be reagentless), would give information about recognisable chemical characters, and would be rapid, automated, non-invasive, quantitative and at least relatively cheap with respect to consumable costs. These requirements indicate a spectroscopic solution, and the purpose of this bid is to build on our expertise within FT-IR reflectance spectroscopy and exploit the use of the new Bruker HTS infrared approach and IR microscope with focal plane array for the characterisation of biological systems. The instrument will be used by at least 30 research-active scientists in Aberystwyth for both existing and new research projects. We propose to exploit the requested FT-IR spectrometer, which has been offered at a very substantial discount by the manufacturer, in (i) rapid fingerprinting of clinically important microbes and for the biodiversity screening of environmental bacteria and fungi, (ii) rapid and non-invasive assessment of food spoilage and food quality, (iii) understanding follicular development in ewes, (iv) metabolomic studies applied to functional genomics in bacteria, fungi, and plants, and (v) metabolite profiling of plants' adaptation to environmental pressures or invading pathogens.
