Abstract

Funds are sought for a benchtop gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer (GC-MS) system for the analysis of biomolecules by research groups comprising 17 academic staff in the Institute of Biological Sciences (IBS), in collaboration with sponsoring equipment manufacturers who include contributors to our recent research publications. Research projects to be supported by the GC-MS involve analysis of bioactive plant metabolites such as hormones and ecological defence compounds; drug discovery programmes based on cytochrome P450s and phytotherapy; and microbial metabolism of cyclic compounds. An additional, Curie Point Pyrolyser (CPP), detector for the GC-MS is requested, which will permit analysis of the pyrolysis products following ballistic sample heating up to defined temperatures. The CPP will be used in research on the characterization of microbial systems, including intact microorganisms, by analytical pyrolysis data deconvoluted by chemometric software. The instrumentation is selected for analytical performance, sample throughput and value for money.
