Abstract

Coherent plant development requires inter-cell communication permitting position dependent establishment and maintenance of cell fates, and concurrent tailoring of cell growth and proliferation in response to developmental and environmental cues. We will use marker lines expressing GFP under various promoters as a basis for dissecting pathways of cell-cell communication regulating cell-fate specification within developing Arabidopsis embryos and roots. Effects of environmental (nutritional) and developmental (growth substance) signals on growth and cell-fate specification will also be addressed using these lines. In parallel we aim to use leaf development as a model not only for understanding the molecular controls underpinning organ initiation and morphogenesis, but also as a system to investigate mechanisms tethering cell division, cell growth and developmental cues dictating organ size. Finally we will investigate in more detail the involvement of Pc-G proteins in regulating the expression of genes controlling both cell proliferation and cell fate throughout plant development. This research programme will provide a broad and integrated base for understanding the co-ordinated control of basic developmental mechanisms allowing the coherent yet plastic growth processes characteristic of plants.
