Abstract

A major part of IGERs research concerns the dissection, mapping, marking and manipulation of complex traits in forage crops and cereals, with a view to increasing basic understanding of nutritional quality, resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses, sustainability and environmental impacts. This work is integrated with IGERs substantial forage and oat crop improvement programs. The use of DNA-based molecular markers for mapping and marker assisted selection is central to this multidisciplinary research. All current research projects at IGER using molecular marker technology and nucleotide sequencing rely on labour-intensive low- throughput gel-based methods. To maximise the potential of core research in these areas, and fully exploit IGERs genetic resources for incorporation of novel traits into existing germplasm, it is necessary to replace current low throughput techniques with a high throughput facility. We are therefore applying for funds to purchase a central high throughput molecular analysis and automated liquid handling system for preparation and analysis of DNA samples. This would not only benefit current research and breeding programmes, but would also enable IGER to utilise the information derived from model plant species, and compete effectively for research contracts in the emerging areas of functional genomics and environmental genomics.
