Abstract

To provide the John Innes Centre and the Institute of Food Research with continuous X- and Q-band EPR and ENDOR equipment operating between 2 and 500 K. This will make a major contribution to research on the structure and functioning of many proteins, including those driven by the new structural biology programmes at JIC and IFR. It will underpin work on several JIC and IFR core projects including oxidative damage in plants, signalling, biological transport processes, breadmaking quality of cereals, DNA gyrase, biomimetic chemistry and enzymes of the nitrogen cycle, plus a medical collaboration on oxidative damage during acute hyperglycaemia. These projects relate to Foresight priorities in catalysis, chemical nitrogen fixation, environment/pollution, denitrification, biochemical technology, diet and health, food and drink safety, food material properties and water purification. No such facility is currently available in the UK. The equipment adds value to the battery of techniques at JIC and IFR for studying biological structure/function relationships and will be available to Norwich Research Park researchers, especially the University of East Anglia (including the BBSRC Centre for Metalloprotein Spectroscopy and Biology) and Norfolk and Norwich Healthcare NHS Trust plus new and continuing collaborations throughout the UK, the EU and elsewhere.
