Abstract
Plant research is carried out by approximately 25% of the staff in the Institute of Biological Sciences. This work funded largely by the BBSRC is dependent on modern plant growth facilities. A recent influx of new staff utilising transgenic plants, pathogens and mutagenised plant populations imposes a pressing need for an insect-proof glasshouse to be used as a lower category containment facility. This glass house will be designed for growing lines used to evaluate defensive signalling pathways in plants under attack by pathogens and will be central to studies on plant hormone biology. Specifically this research includes discerning the role of salicylic acid and oxygen species in plant defence and thermotolerance. Plant hormone biologists are investigating the role of cytokinins in senescence and defence and evaluating the role of brassinosteroids in plant growth and development. These studies are geared towards identifying novel approaches to generate crops that have enhanced yield, superior stress response and that are more pathogen resistant.
