Abstract

A facility will be established to prepare and analyse DNA microarrays. The study of many processes in biology involves the analysis of expression of genes under different circumstances. Recently, with the availability of DNA sequence libraries and complete genomes, it has become possible to study the regulation of many genes simultaneously, by making microarrays of thousands of genes or cDNAs on microscope slides and hybridising with fluorescent probes derived from RNA obtained under different conditions: functional genomics rather than functional genetics. The applicants will use the facility to study a range of fundamental and applied questions involving fission yeast, nematodes, fruit flies, cockroaches, leeches, parasitic caterpillars and mosquitoes.
