Abstract
This proposal requests new infrastructure support to purchase a Biorad Proteome Works Spot-Cutter system for expansion of functional genomic research in the multi-institution based Aberystwyth Biocentre (ABC). Research scientists within ABC are pioneering new developments in proteome technology and also incorporating proteomics to address the Research Council funded problems and land based bio-sciences. The system requested interfaces with current BBSRC/HEFCW funded equipment, including a Micromass MALDI-TOF-MS system. Two proteome equipment manufacturers (BioRad and Micromass) have co- operated to develop an automated protein-spot identification system that removes a process bottleneck between upstream and downstream proteomics, and provides both greater reproducibility and higher throughput. The project between ABC and BioRad is in the area of spot detection algorithms for 2-D gels, specifically in the optimisation of glycoprotein analysis. Thus, as a result of our background in protein biochemistry we have negotiated a significant collaboration. The application is driven by specific research council proteome projects in veterinary parasitology and medical microbiology. The proteome suite at Aberystwyth also underpins a number of currently funded BBSRC functional genomic projects and other new pump priming research themes.
