Abstract

Structure-function analysis of novel mammalian genes is a major objective in the post genomic era. One strategy for functional analysis of protein products is through established cells or lines engineered to over- express a particular wild-type or mutant gene product. These valuable resources are expensive and time- consuming to produce, but can be maintained long-term by cryopreservation. For each construct multiple lines and replicates need to be cryopreserved and existing School facilities are near capacity. Monoclonal antibodies also form a major part of research in the School and hybridoma stocks require preservation. The School of Biological Sciences has an urgent need to rationalise, centralise and expand facilities for cell cryopreservation. The proposed cryo-storage facility will be the only such facility in Southampton and will support a series of collaborative research programmes, currently funded externally and attracting multi- million pounds of grant income. These projects concern those supported by BBSRC, medical charities and the EU together with MRC funded developments at Centre and Co-operative levels. The facility will be housed in a dedicated room allowing easy access to the externally located bulk storage tank. Centralisation and the auto-filling capability of sample storage tanks will free technician time, and the bulk static tank will prove cost-effective by reducing the frequency of liquid nitrogen deliveries.
