Abstract

DNA sequence analysis is at the core of much of the research performed in the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Southampton. A previous JREI application (1998) financed the purchase of a PE Biosystems ABI377DNA analyser, which has become an essential facility for many groups. Through the first year since installation, usage has grown to the point where availability of the facility is becoming limiting. The machine is heavily used for both DNA sequencing and microsatellite analysis and has been used by 16 groups spread through all three research divisions within the School. The facility has become a victim of its own success and several bottlenecks have become apparent. The aim of this proposal is to effectively more than double the capacity of the facility through the purchasing of several specific items. The proposal represents a cost efficient means to allow continued growth in the use of this sequence analysis facility to maximise the benefits for research within this School.
