Abstract

DNA sequencing is a fundamental requirement for all aspects of molecular biology research. The University of the West of England, Bristol has a diverse range of research projects ongoing that involve the definition of DNA sequences. These include subjects in the biomedical sciences (molecular biology of haemopoiesis, leukaemia, apoptosis and the red cell membrane/blood group antigens); molecular biology of plants (H202- induced gene expression in Arabidopsis thaliana; molecular biology of auxin action; molecular biology of virulence in plant pathogens) and investigations of the mechanisms of action of certain antibiotics. This proposal aims to establish a core sequencing facility within the faculty to underpin these key areas of activities, in particular in the Centre for Research in Biomedicine and the Centre for Research in Plant Science within the University. The DNA sequencing facility will initiate platform growth to mobilise planned research in molecular biology, and is a central part of the Faculty19940527s planned expansion in its research agenda.
