Abstract

Rapid increases in the activity of cell biology and molecular cytogenetic research in this department has identified six priority areas of research. Currently the department holds over irectorate4 million in funding and considerable value will be added to our current BBSRC (and other) funded initiatives by the acquisition of new bioimaging facilities. Our research into animal genomics, infertility, 3D/4D imaging of nuclei, the ageing of skin, telomere biology and cancer gene discovery currently includes 32 research projects that require bioimaging. We thus request funding for 3 bioimaging systems specifically tailored to augment the infrastructure within this department and promote further research growth. Many of the BBSRC and Foresight priorities (e.g., ageing, biomaterials etc.) are addressed and we have attracted funding from two industrial sponsors. The first, a bioimaging company, is interested in products and software development arising from our work on telomere biology. The synergy of research within this department in combination with our collective links with industry and other institutions coincide with the goals of BBSRC and Foresight. In addition, this equipment will assist us in the training of students at all levels.
