Abstract

The project involves the development of CLSM as a means of studying the interaction of drug delivery systems with biological tissues. In particular, the approach involves the investigation of the delivery systems themselves, the nature of the biological target tissue and the nature of the interaction when the delivery system is in contact with the target site. The consortium involved comprises three academic (The School of Pharmacy, The Queen's University of Belfast; The Eastman Dental Institute, University of London; The School of Pharmacy, University of London) and three industrial institutions (Galen Pharmaceuticals, Reckitt and Colman, Leica Microsystems (UK) Ltd.) with complementary skill bases and research interests. The specific areas of interest include bioadhesion of polysaccharide delivery systems to oesophageal tissue, the characterisation of intravaginal ring systems for sustained delivery of hormonal drugs, the transport of drugs across cervical tissue, the penetration and kill of microbial biofilms by fluoroquinolones, the study of the architecture of oral biofilms and the site-selective delivery of zinc (II) phthalocyanine (ZnPc) to peroxidation-sensitive targets within carcinomas and melanomas. Over and above the information obtained on these particular issues, it is intended that the confocal facility will provide a focus for future collaborations between members of the consortium.
