Abstract

The requested funds, matched by funds from 2 biotechnology companies, a major charitable foundation and a research institute, will allow the replacement of obsolete, unreliable and inefficient 40-year-old growth chambers with new facilities which increase the capacity for large scale genetic studies 10-fold and provide high specification environmental control. Planned use includes: 1). continuing studies of growth, development, metabolism and disease resistance by 12 molecular plant science groups; 2). development of an integrated Arabidopsis functional genomics programme centring on the use of activation tagging for the identification and cloning of novel genes affecting key traits; and 3). ecophysiology research on carbon cycle microcosms and climate change.
