Abstract

The aim of this proposal is to establish a new laser-capture microdissection/cDNA micro- array facility in the Department of Biological Sciences at Durham, for the analysis of gene expression at the single cell level during development and in response to pathogenesis in plants and animals. This will form part of a wider strategy to establish an enhanced research facility for the analysis of gene expression and protein synthesis in plant and animal cells to be supported by a new interdepartmental research development in bioinformatics. The biological focus will be in addressing questions of the control of cell fate and transcriptome changes in relation to: 1). control of embryonic cell fate in plants; 2). genomics and proteomics of plant pathogenesis; 3). epithelial-mesenchymal signalling and control of cell fate in skin appendages; 4). haematopoietic stem cell biology; 5). neuronal regulation and 6). control of vertebrate craniofacial development
