Abstract

Many cellular properties are heterogeneously distributed, and in many cases bulk, macroscopic measurements are inappropriate and misleading. Flow cytometry provides a method for measuring the properties of individual cells, and we have pioneered its use in microbiology. Our workhorse instrument (a Skatron Argus) no longer functions and is no longer made. The equipment requested will underpin the work of the applicants and others in microbial growth, resuscitation, dormancy, detection, speciation and enumeration, in the analysis of heterogeneous physiological states in axenic laboratory cultures of respiratory and photosynthetic microbes, in studies of apoptosis in mammalian cells, and in the heterogeneous expression of cytochromes P450 in a variety of systems.
