Abstract
The OCMS is an interdisciplinary research centre whose research activities provide fundamental knowledge and understanding of the structure, function and reactivity of protein molecules. Methodological advances over the last decade offer not only the prospect of describing protein behaviour at atomic resolution in both structural and dynamic terms, but also the hope of consciously altering their properties, with consequent major benefits in human health and welfare. Beyond these benefits lies the longer term understanding of protein evolution and its relationship to the evolution of all life. The scientific aims of the research programme are centered on the following questions: How does a protein fold following synthesis in the ribosome? What are the determinants of its structure? How does this generate its function? How does a protein recognise and interact specifically with other molecules? As an IRC, OCMS aims to take a central role in facilitating the co-ordination and communication of effort within its defined priority areas, and providing resource and impetus to specific targets, bringing together activities in Oxford, the UK and internationally. It aims to promote research at the very highest international level, and to act as a link between academic research and the pharmaceutical industry.
