Abstract

1. Investigate the pharmacology and mechanisms of chemical modulation of transmission at a rectifying electrical synapse, including modulation by changes in post-synaptic membrane properties, and possible direct changes in junctional conductance. 2. Investigate the cause of a standing difference in resting potential between the pre- and post-synaptic neurones, which biases the rectifying synapse into the low conductance state in the resting condition. 3. Develop a method of short-term culture of the cell bodies of the pre- and post- synaptic neurones, and attempt to establish rectifying and non-rectifying electrical synapses in vivo.
