Abstract

We aim, in conjunction with Zeneca seeds, to overproduce biodegradable plastics (polyhydroxyalkanoates) in oilseed rape and evaluate their extraction. At Durham the synthesis of co-polymer polyhydroxybutyrate/polyhydroxyvalerate (PHB/PHV) and the alternative polyhydroxydecanoate(PHD) will be engineered by the metabolic manipulation of Brassica napus. At Manchester the enhancement of gene stability and expression will be undertaken by cloning the PHB genes into the chloroplast genome. Extraction and biochemical processing requirements will be evaluated and developed at University College, London. (Joint with grants 34/IMI05369 and 50/IMI05370.)
