Abstract

We propose to establish a facility for functional genomics research in farm and veterinary animals. The facility will combine the functions of a resource centre and a research hotel. It will serve as a repository for molecular genetic resources. Through state-of-the- art robotics and equipment it will offer custom arrays for global surveys of DNA and RNA variation. The research hotel will provide comprehensive facilities for experimentation from high-resolution micro-dissection, micro-array creation and scanning to sophisticated analysis. Bioinformatics resources and tools will be developed to capture and analyse the data and to allow effective integration with other data sources. Training in the laboratory and informatics aspects will be provided. Geographically distributed satellite centres will be established. A programme of experimentation is proposed.
