Abstract

To assess gene flow through and gene expression in plastids present in cereal and grass pollen. We will generate stable nuclear transgenic wheat containing organelle targeted-GFP to monitor the fate of GFP- tagged organelles during pollen development. The presence, integrity and expression of plastid DNA in pollen from barley, Lolium, maize, Secale and wheat will be determined. Identification of inter- and intra- specific plastid DNA polymorphisms will be used to assess the frequency of transmission of paternal plastids in inter- and intra-specific crosses involving barley, Lolium, maize, Secale and wheat. Crop to crop and crop to weed transmissions of plastid DNA will be examined by sampling experimental plots and weed populations. (Joint with grant 206/GM114215)
