Abstract
A resource family of pigs derived from pig lines resistant and susceptible to salmonellosis will be screened for susceptibility to salmonellosis following oral inoculation with Salmonella choleraesuis. DNA samples from the individuals will be sampled for subsequent qualitative trait locus analysis. Individuals will be screened for polymorphisms in nramp1, LPS and sal1, genetic loci known to influence the susceptibility of other animal species to salmonellosis. Polymorphisms will be correlated to the bactericidal activity and cytokine responsiveness of macrophages, and susceptibility of macrophages of donor animals to infection.
