Abstract

We propose to deploy existing mapped microsatellites of wheat and barley to create map- based DNA profiles of the major wheat and barley cultivars. For each species more than 500 cultivars will be genotyped with a minimum of 50 barley or wheat microsatellites. The resulting database will catalyse a major shift in the conceptual analysis of cereal breeding away from phenotypic to genotypic evaluation of cultivar development. In addition to providing a retrospective analysis of cultivar production the results will also facilitate the deployment of molecular breeding strategies.
