Abstract
In 1994, 17,000 UK farmers grew F1 hybrid, Zea mays. In recognition of its importance to both UK farmers, and European seed and agrochemical companies, the authors laboratory has provided many UK, EU and US researchers with maize YAC clones. In the near future this service will be extended to include maize BAC clones. In addition to this facility, the laboratory has developed a fingerprinting procedure, to dissect and organise the maize genome into contigs. Via this proposal, resources are requested to both allow this screening and fingerprinting work to continue, and to extend the work to the characterisation of a genomic region linked to the super locus Rp1-A-Rp1-N (for rust resistance). Characterisation of this very unusual region of the maize genome will increase our understanding of how recombination leads to the formation of new resistance gene alleles in an agronomically important crop.
