Abstract
The Fox genes encode transcription factors. We have identified a conserved cluster of Fox genes that are expressed in different subdivisions of bilaterian mesoderm. We first propose to extend our understanding of this gene cluster in the bilateria by characterising Fox gene organisation and expression in polychaetes, members of the Lophotrochozoa. Secondly, we propose to characterise Fox gene clustering and expression in Cnidaria and Ctenophora. This will allow inference of primitive organisation and function of the cluster in the bilateria, and will indicate how it evolved during the early evolution of the bilateria, giving insight into the relationship between cluster expansion and mesoderm origin and diversification.
