Abstract
Communication between developing cell-layers is key in to the co-ordinated generation of consistently sized and shaped plant organs, and fundamental to the developmental plasticity which characterises plant development. We aim to investigate how cells of the L1 (outer) cell-layer of plant meristems and organ primordia communicate with surrounding and underlying cells to maintain their tightly regulated plane of cell-division and identity. The ACR4 receptor kinase is required for normal L1 cell-layer behaviour in developing ovule integuments. Protein localisation studies suggest a possible role in communication between L1 cells and their neighbours. Using acr4 mutants and the ACR4 promoter as starting materials, a co-ordinated 3-way approach to identify other elements in the molecular pathways involved in cell-layer communication will be undertaken.
