Abstract

The ability to distinguish each chicken chromosome has many applications within the BBSRC remit. These include development, gene mapping, agriculture, molecular ecology, DT40 studies, comparative genomics and genome function/organisation. Recent experiments confirm that, uniquely, we now have this ability. We therefore seek to establish a resource centre to disseminate chicken chromosome identifier probes and provide an avian gene mapping and karyotype definition service to expedite/facilitate BBSRC related research. We will sub-clone and rigorously test our existing probes ensuring they are bright and specific, develop a multi-colour karyotyping protocol and widely disseminate information about our services. Research priorities and progress will be managed by a steering committee and, after the period of funding, we expect the centre to be self-financing.
