Abstract
KT/KUP/HAK transporters are known to mediate K+ transport in variety of organisms including plants where activity of these genes is important for many developmental events. Our recent study uncovered a novel function for some KT/KUP/HAK gene products in Arabidopsis. They are intimately involved in transport of auxin, the major plant pattern formation factor. The aim of this proposal is to reveal the structural determinants in KT/KUP/HAK genes that are responsible for morphogenic activity and to elucidate molecular mechanisms underlying the relationship between KT/KUP/HAK function, auxin transport and plant development. To achieve this goal we plan to 1) to undertake biochemical and molecular-genetic analysis of the coupling between TRH1 activity and auxin transport; 2) to investigate correlation between developmental phenotypes, KT/KUP/HAK expression patterns, and auxin profile in plant tissue, 3) to analyse structure-function relationship within KT/KUP/HAK gene family.
