Abstract
A genome project for Entamoeba histolytica is underway, and one early finding is a unique tRNA gene organisation. Almost all are found in long tandem arrays of repeat units containing one to five tRNA genes separated from each other by short, tandemly repeated, non coding DNA. Not only is the organisation unique but the number of genes for most tRNA isoacceptor types is unprecedented, ranging from dozens to hundreds. The origin and function of these arrays is totally unknown. This study will investigate the organisation of tRNA genes in other species in the genus of known relationships with a view to better understanding how, and perhaps gaining an insight into why, this unique organisation arose.
