Abstract

Comparative biologists increasingly need larger, more comprehensive phylogenetic trees. The upper limit on the size of trees that can be inferred directly, means that this demand can only be met through the combination of sets of smaller but overlapping subtrees to produce larger more inclusive supertrees. This research aims to identify the existing and potential supertree methods with the most promising properties, to quantify the accuracy and speed of the most promising methods through simulations, and to implement the methods with the best properties in user-friendly software. The research will also develop sensitivity analyses and support measures that quantify the stability of the relationships within supertrees and methods that identify the species responsible for unstable relationships allowing supertree methodology to guide future research.
