Abstract

This project addresses a fundamental question in pathogen biology, latency, by exploring host-pathogen interaction at the global gene transcription level. Microarray technology affords the possibility to identify even subtle phenotypic changes by direct or indirect effects on expression levels. We propose to combine and integrate host and pathogen DNA microarray analysis of a murine cytomegalovirus infection and its reversible inhibition by interferons. The development of bioinformatic and computational tools in establishing an integrated relational database will assist in determining host-virus gene interactions. These studies are likely to provide important insights and methodology toward integrating gene interaction networks in general.
