Abstract

Extra Sporogenous Cells (ESP), the first gene discovered to be involved in the assignment of anther cell fate in Arabidopsis has been characterised and mapped within 110 kb on a BAC for which sequence is now available. ESP expression will be explored using in situ hybridisation, reporter constructs and immunolocalisation. The identity of aberrant cells in esp anthers will be investigated using known marker sequences. These data, combined with functional predictions from the ESP sequence and information on expression of other early male genes such as sporocyteless will be used to construct a first model for the molecular regulation of cellular development in the angiosperm anther.
