Abstract

The DNA sequence of Arabidopsis is expected to be completed in the year 2000. This raises two major challenges: 1) to determine the function of the identified genes; and 2) to establish the extent to which these functions are conserved or have diverged in other species. To address both problems, we propose to enhance the genomics capability of a complementary dicot system, Antirrhinum majus, in a way that builds on its existing strengths, but makes it easier to make the jump between species. Genome sequence information will be exploited to establish levels of microsynteny and to produce a comparative functional and structural map of Antirrhinum and Arabidopsis. This will enable Arabidopsis and Antirrhinum researchers, as well as the wider plant community, to benefit from the advantages of both systems and ensure that functional genomics can be more productively applied to plants.
