Abstract
I propose new work on the evolution of sex chromosomes in the plant Silene latifolia. The goal to find further X-linked loci, by an approach that has already produced one such locus. Sequence data available for genes in this species will be used to obtain genetic variants, known from my previous work to be abundant in outbreeding plants. The variants will be used to test for sex linkage. I also propose sequence studies of X- and Y- linked loci that have already been discovered by other labs using different approaches, in order to discover whether these are in the pairing or differential segment of the Y. The loci identified will be used to test for degeneration of Y-linked homologues, define different Y- chromosomal regions, to study sequence diversity, for quantitative expression studies to test for dosage compensation, and for linkage studies to illuminate the origin of sex chromosomes.
