Abstract
The genomic DNA sequences of a set of at least 30 genes will be determined, in three species of the virilis group of Drosophila, plus an outgroup, D. hydei. This will enable determination of the direction and rate of change in codon preferences among both closely and distantly related species. Studies of within-species variation in DNA sequences for a sub-set of these genes will be conducted, in order to assess the strength and direction of selection on synonymous codons. The sequence data that will be generated by this project are relevant to other important evolutionary questions about genome organisation and evolution.
