Abstract

Tiny Root Hair 1, a gene belonging to the family of K+ transporters has been cloned in Norwich from a population of T-DNA transformed Arabidopsis lines. Mutation in this gene results in the arrest of root hair growth soon after an initiation. Expression of TRH1 in yeast mutant strain complemented K+ deficient phenotype indicating K+ transport function of this protein. Two other members of TRH1 family AtKT1 and AtKT2 were isolated and characterised in Wye. We apply jointly for collaborative grant to explore a role of TRH1 in root hair growth and K+ uptake. Funding is requested for a) study of protein localisation b) study of TRH1 transport properties in heterologous system, c) characterisation of TRH1 action on cation transport in the plant plasma membrane, d) analysis of TRH1 interaction with signalling in planta.
