Abstract
We propose to investigate the control and coordination of cell division within the root meristem of Arabidopsis by selective misexpression of genes that disrupt the cell cycle. We shall: (1) exploit a new GAL4-based system, developed by us, for precise disruption of cell division in particular cell layers, and (2) produce new fluorescent protein markers for visualising the cell cycle and cell division in living tissues. The application of these powerful and specific tools to the Arabidopsis system with its well characterised root morphology will allow us to address important questions about how cell division is coordinated between different layers of the root meristem.
