Abstract
Mutations will be accumulated on the 3rd chromosome of Drosophila melanogaster. The homozygous effects of mutations on fitness and viability will be assayed at 15, 30, 45 and 60 generations of accumulation. The genetic variances of fitness and viability among homozygous chromosomes isolated from an equilibrium population will be determined. Movements of transposable elements will also be followed. The results will (a) provide estimates of the mutation rate and fitness effects of detrimental mutations (b) test for epistasis among the fitness effects of mutations (c) estimate their heterozygous fitness effects (d) test for a relation between movements of transposable elements and sudden changes in line means.
