Abstract

We have established a unique set of lines of mice by 60 generations of selection over a period of 17 years for growth, fatness and feed intake, and have brought in selected lines from labs elsewhere. These are an important resource for mapping quantitative trait loci (QTL) and identifying the relevant genes. The aim is to maintain and further develop this resource by inbreeding the selection lines to facilitate QTL detection, development of congenic backcross lines by selection to isolate QTL of large effect, and testing for candidate genes. Separate applications will be made for other studies, such as fine-scale QTL mapping and investigation of factors associated with the selection response, e.g. leptin.
