Abstract

The aim of this proposed study is to characterise novel genes required for the determination of cells within the central nervous system (CNS) of Drosophila We have isolated a number that affect cell fate choice in the CNS. The phenotypes of these mutants will be studied in detail and those that affect cell fate choice late in the neuroblast lineage will be characterised molecularly. Once the novel gene products have been identified, misexpression experiments will be used to assay their ability to switch the fate of individual cells within the nervous system. We also hope to isolate vertebrate homologues of any novel genes in order to identify functional domains and to assess the conservation of developmental mechanism.
