Abstract
Toxoplasma gondii is an obligate intracellular protozoan pathogen which can infect both animal and human hosts. An acute infection can cause birth defects and is a major contributor to all AIDS related deaths. Current research on T. gondii would ultimately benefit from the information generated by a genome analytic approach. The overall objective of the project is to construct an EST or expression map of the T. gondii genome. This will be accomplished by: 1) mapping 70 known RFLPs and 3000 independent ESTs onto cosmid shuttle vector and BAC genomic T. gondii libraries, 2) fingerprinting the cosmid shuttle vector library to form a scaffold from the EST generated contigs, and 3) continuing the data entry and development of the ToxoDB database.
