Abstract
The TIP2 gene will be isolated using an existing mutant of Arabidopsis thaliana. The mechanism by which TIP2 controls cell shape during tip growth in root hairs and pollen tubes will be investigated in three ways: 1 The sequences of genomic and cDNA clones will be analysed to identify any homology to genes of known function. 2. Expression analysis will reveal the cell types in which TIP2 acts. 3. Characterisation of the temperature-sensitive tip2 phenotype will reveal the stages during root-hair and pollen-tube development when the TIP2 gene product is required.
