Abstract
We shall measure the effects on total fitness of a large sample of wild type chromosomes to determine the statistical distribution of genetic variation for total fitness. We shall determine how different components of fitness contribute to genetic variation in total fitness, to evaluate theories of sexual selection and life history evolution. We shall use recombinants between chromosomes of known effect on total fitness to test for epistatic effects on fitness, to evaluate theories of the evolution of sex and of speciation.
