Abstract

A family of fungal transcriptional activators, related to GAL4 in their DNA binding domain, will be analysed to address the following issues; a) how do a family of related DNA binding proteins distinguish their own particular DNA site, b) what are the targets of this family of proteins allowing them to act as activators, and c) do negative regulators control the activity of various family members. Understanding how a family of proteins adapt to use a common DNA-binding motif to recognise different DNA sites will give insight into the process of molecular evolution, while the identification of proteins that interact with transcriptional activators will lead to a better understanding of the mechanisms of activation and repression.
