Abstract

Gene sequence data collected from a sample of contemporary individuals can be used to make inference about the dynamical history of a population. Several sources of error are recognised, some of which will be reduced, while the influence of others will be estimated. Methods will be developed (i) to more accurately estimate genealogical coalescence times; (ii) to determine how inaccuracies that remain bias conclusions about whether specific models of population history can account of genealogical tree structure; (iii) to assess the power and robustness of methods for distinguishing among different models; and (iv) to produce estimates for the parameters of statistical models of the data.
