Abstract
The genetic basis for bundle sheath cell development in Arabidopsis leaves and the cell specific nature of patterns of chloroplast biogenesis will be elucidated by analysing existing and novel mutants perturbed in differential chloroplast and/or bundle sheath cell development. The role of arc genes in bundle sheath chloroplast development will be addressed particularly in relation to the patterns and extent of chloroplast divisions within bundle sheath cells. The detailed temporal and spatial pattern of bundle sheath cell differentiation in relation to vascular development will be determined with the aid of bundle sheath cell specific markers.
